Review and Analysis of Kanfor Acon cap

Introduction

I’ll start quick: I have been using this cap for the last 8 years or so, on each one and every expedition that I have been on during that time. Both in summer and in winter. During this time, I also tried several other caps – none of them can compare. Just go and get it. That could be the end of the review, but let me elaborate a bit on why this cap is such a great piece of clothing.

First, the use cases. I take Acon for summer/autumn expeditions as a primary cap, used when it gets chilly. It just never fails. Second, I use it for winter expedition, as a supporting cap. When it gets extremely cold, I use it together with the main, very warm cap. I also use it when sleeping.

Acon use case 1: a summer expedition. This day was cold and rainy. Here, Acon is somewhere in the endless tundra of the Anabar Plateau, the Arctic of Asia
Acon use case 2: a winter expedition. On that day, it was around -50 C. Here, Acon is somewhere in the deep taiga of the Putorana Plateau, the Subarctic of Asia.

Let’s now iterate over the adventages of Acon.

  1. First, Acon is really lightweight. At 38 grams of a listed weight, it is lighter than other such caps that I used in the past.
  2. Second, despite the low weight, it is very warm. In summer, I had many days with temperatures between around -5 C and +5 C, and a lot of rain. When I had this jacket on, it never really felt cold. In winter, it was even below -50 C. While I never used Acon on its own in such temperatures while struggling during the day, it made my nights in a sleeping bag much more comfortable.
  3. This cap is just really comfortable. It has a nice, technical and stretchy outfit, and it never feels clumsy.
  4. The cap is great at blocking the wind. Arctic can be extremely windy.
  5. It has an amazingly useful feature: while it covers the ears, you can also roll up its sides, so that the ears are exposed. It greatly helps when it gets too warm to cover the ears, but too cold to completely take the cap off.
  6. It fits amazingly well under a climbing helmet.

In summary, Kanfor Acon is an amazing cap, useful at any expedition, both in winter and in summer. I cannot recommend it stronger.
